Absolutely vile on a formal and thematic level. Fukasaku's physical, distorted direction always manages to impress me, because he is balancing total precision and making it look and feel chaotic.
Perfectly suits his tales of Yakuza violence and self-immolation where these characters are completely ambivalent to whatever death and destruction they cause. Street Mobster is filled to the brim with characters who are completely compromised on a moral level, but none more-so than the one played by Bunta Sugawara, who barely resembles a man, with his bleeding husk physicality.
This is one of his greatest performances, because he's locked in with the wreckage he causes, only finding out too late that whatever humanity he had left in him was turned….
Bunta plays a nasty dude in this one. It's great see him turn on the completely reckless, takes no orders or shit from anyone! He's not even really likable in this either. Still a great chaotic and nihilistic movie. Bunta Sugawara stabs, rapes and drinks his way through the yakuza power ladder. People in "shock" over something like Wolf of Wall Street might not pass the first act of this film.
